NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming): The Founders and the early years

“We take the very best of what people do, synthesise it down, make it learnable and share it with each other –  and that is what the real future of what NLP will be and its gonna stay that way!”

NLP  (Neuro Linguistic Programming) was developed in the early to mid 70’s in the United States by two young scientists of the University of  Santa Cruz. John Grinder, a professor of linguistics and Richard Bandler, a mathematician and graduate student of computer programming and psychology who already worked as a therapist for Gestalt therapy. Grinder and Bandler studied the work of the most successful psychotherapists. These therapists, especially the founder of Gestalt therapy, Fritz Perls, family therapist Virginia Satir and the doctor and hypno-therapist Milton Erickson were famous for their amazing achievements.

Their therapeutic approaches were completely different from each other and at first glance they seemed to have nothing in common. But Grinder and Bandler wanted to find out about the reasons for their success and looked in detail at the language that these therapists used. They found a number of language patterns used by all of them and as they began to apply these speech patterns in their own work they had similarly impressive success.

The second main focus of their research were our perceptions of reality. They found that we normally cannot see reality as it is but altered by various filtering processes that create ‘our’ own personal reality. As a result one very important pre-supposition of NLP is ‘The map is not the territory’.  This has nothing to do with geographical maps of course! Simply explained: If ten people look at an object, the object stays the same but if you then ask the ten people what they saw they will each give a different description. NLP works on the principle that by knowing about these filters in ourselves and others communication becomes much easier.Bandler and Grinder soon realized that their findings not only had importance for the field of therapy but also for business, education, sports, relationships and other areas.

Their research led to examine successful people of all kinds; CEOs, Entrepreneurs, Scientists, Teachers, Athletes etc  NLP is about modelling human excellence. It is about not inventing something new but modelling existing behaviours of people  who are extremely successful.

soulrefresher view:

“We’ve experienced first hand, both personally and with our clients, how NLP can help people to find real solutions for their problems in personal and professional life, through the beneficial tools and techniques that it offers. NLP empowers people to make the right decisions for themselves which enable them to lead richer and more fulfilling lives”.

Richard Bandler and John Grinder still continue to offer courses in NLP globally.
