We’re kickstarting the series with a BBC short documentary about meditation which features the reporter Kathy Sykes as she undergoes a personal journey of experience. This is the first documentary of a 6 part series. Each of the documentaries are approximately 10 minutes long and offer a wide spectrum of opinions on meditation from buddhist monks to neuro scientists but in a humourous and slightly skeptical western manner.
Kathy starts her journey in Nepal asking the questions; how can meditation improve our body and mind ? Can we really train our brain? And of course the ultimate question – does meditation has the power to make us happier people ? With over 10 million people meditating regularly in the west there must be some benefit to be gained.
In part 1 Kathy goes to Nepal to meet a buddhist monk, Matthieu Richard, also a trained microbiologist. The monk says that he wants to demystify meditation by science (something we at soulrefresher are also very interested in). The documentary looks at breathing techniques and how to stabilise the mind through breathing. Kathy offers a very personal touch to the documentary as she reveals her own first impressions from the experience.
Part 2 will be about bringing this first ‘oriental’ experience back into the West and into the brain labs for reasearch.
